You are probably thinking of the HERI survey program at UCLA<http://www.heri.ucla.edu/>. They have administered a survey covering those values and many other things for 50 years. One of their recent publications<http://www.heri.ucla.edu/PDFs/pubs/TFS/Trends/Monographs/TheAmericanFreshman40YearTrends.pdf> discusses some of these findings.
