Upgrading it is no problem - your account is linked to the media access
key which would not change. You can get an upgrade kit that just adds
a drive and nothing changes except you have additional space, but it's
better to get the kit that replaces your drive with a much larger one.
If you take the latter route you lose all of your recorded programs,
obviously, as you are removing the drive they are stored on. If you
just ad a drive you just get more space and that's it. I'm not sure
how the tivo divides up the space between the drives but this does not
appear to be a problem.
Getting an additional TiVo off of ebay (which I have done) is also a
viable choice as you get more space pretty cheaply, the additional TiVo
costs less than half as much as the primary one to operate, and you can
now record two shows at the same time. I actually have four here, all
networked together, and on Wednesday night they are all going as I'm
away from home and it's a good TV night.
Two of them sit in the garage with cheapo B&W tv's on tehm that are
only there so I can program the things - I watch all of the shows on
the main unit as they are easily moved from one machine to another if
they are networked. My main system is the only one with a cable box
and I use it to record the shows that are on channels that require the
cable box to tune. Everythign below channel 80 I record on oneof the
other ones and then move them to the main system to watch.
