At this time the contract between TiVo and DirecTV ends in early
2007. If it is not renewed then DirecTV will still provide service
and support to existing users, but they will not be able to sell TiVo
to new customers.

They are planning to ship their NDS based DVRs this fall, and will
focus all marketing on them.

As for MPEG4 - right now only new HDTV signals are planned to be in
MPEG4. Existing HDTV will remain in MPEG2 for the foreseeable future,
and SDTV will remain in MPEG2 indefinitely.

Remember, switching from MPEG2 to MPEG4 wouldn't just mean replacing
DirecTiVo units, it would mean replacing ALL DirecTV receivers in the
field. The cost would be astronomical.

The NDS DVRs are only SD for now, the HD model is expected in early
2006. So they will continue to offer HD-DirecTiVo for now to those
customers. As they roll out MPEG4 HDTV, there may be a swap program
for DirecTiVo users who are impacted by it.
