DirecTV, and have been using a
couple of Hughes DirecTivo boxes for several years (but only 1 tuner in use
in each because I didn't go to the trouble of running extra coax).
I self-installed the system originally, and I am now starting to see signal
strength problems, not all of which are attributable to rain fade (although,
being in the Northwest, the satellite is low in the sky so the rain could be
in Oklahoma I guess). I have a feeling that the long runs of coax I
originally installed might be part of the problem. The other part might be
that the tree that was almost blocking the signal 8 years ago probably
shifted a few weeks ago when part of it fell down, so maybe the dish needs
re-positioning (or if I'm lucky just re-aiming). It's not my tree or I'd
know exactly what to do about it ;-)
Anyway, I'm not looking forward to getting up on the roof and re-doing all
that work, and I'm wondering what folks think my options are.
Is it likely that DirecTV will give me a free install to keep me as a
customer? And are their installers good at fishing cables, or do they just
run them around the outside of the house like I did (ugh!)?
If I go with a reinstall, either by DirecTV or myself, what type of dish
should I be looking at in order to keep my options open for future system
enhancements (such as high def, 2-way internet, teleportation<g>)?
And finally, with the falling out between DirecTV and TiVo, does anybody
have any experience with combined Comcast/TiVo units? (I'm not even sure if
they are out yet, or just vaporware, since I haven't had any intention of
switching to Comcast, but this might be the motivator).
Opinions gratefully accepted.
Thanks ... Mike
