PBX is indeed a digital phone line. More importantly, it ships
data to the handset, such as voicemail and call information. This
data coming back to the handset is additional power on the phone line
that can damage a computer modem. You may have a Centrex instead --
that would be your building being given a dedicated bank of numbers at
the local phone company. Both of these can look just like a
plain-old-telephone-system phone. You need to ask your phone company
people if it is safe to plug a modem into the phone line, and after
they answer ask, "Are you absolutely sure?" Then ask them they're name.
I think I am mistaken on the phone number -- I think Tivo has a
lot of numbers all across the country. My apologies on that. You may
need to make a toll call if there is not a local number. I think you
may have better options on you internet connection. Again, if you
have your PC set up to access the internet connection, you can set it
to share that connection and then the Tivo would access the internet
through your PC which would handle all your proxies and the like.
Your Tivo box would essentially just have a clean connection to the net.
