Like all mechanical things, hard drives will eventually fail. Most of
the time it will take years for this to happen, but there will always
be some percentage that suffer an early failure due to manufacturing
defects, damage, environmental issues, etc. And it a TiVo it is
usually the drive that fails.
Other solid state components can fail as well, for similar reasons,
but that is less likely and they tend ot last much longer.
With millions of TiVos out in the world, unfrotunately there will be
some users who experience the early failures, while most users will
experience years of troublefree operation.
