Companies sometime offer retention plans when someone is going to
cancel. TiVo has done this, and the most common offer is dropping to
a $6.95/month rate. Doing that can keep a customer who is otherwise
going to leave, and lower churn. And hopefully that customer will
come around and provide more revenue in the future - buy a newer box,
use some value-added service (say they start offering broadband video
rental), spread good word of mouth, etc. Versus just losing them and
any revenue. But it isn't really ethical to make false threats to
cancel to try to con them into a lower rate - and you may not get the
offer, not everyone does, so you may ask to cancel and find yourself
without TiVo service and then need to reactivate at the new rates with
a new minimum commitment.
