MZ, I know that there aren't any more DirecTiVo units coming what I was
hoping for was a TiVo that would control DTV the same way that my S2
controls my cable box, through an IR blaster. Will that work with an S2
and a DTV receiver? Would that work with the newer S3 that is coming
out, I'm guessing not on the S3 because of your comment about handling
HD with a standalone receiver? I actually have and S2 connected to the
non-HD outputs of an HD cable box as its still a clearer picture than
just the regular SD cable box. I know its not recording HD but that's
okay for those shows, so based on the set up that I have now I was
thinking that an HD receiver and an HD TiVo (standalone) would get me
the recordings in HD... any thoughts on that configuration.
Thanks in advance...

The new, lower-cost HD box will be antenna and cable just like the
current S3.
At this point there will be no more DirecTiVo units, sorry. DirecTV
switched to NDS as their DVR supplier and they do not allow 3rd
parties, like TiVo, to make DirecTV compatible receivers. And you
can't handle HD with a standalone DTV receiver and an external DVR.
There is a faint bit of hope. This switch happened when News Corp
bought DirecTV. News Corp also owns NDS - hence the switch, it kept
the work 'in house'. But News Corp is now selling DirecTV to Liberty
Media, with the deal closing later this year. Liberty Media is one of
the major investors in TiVo. So it is *possible* that they would
reverse the decision, or in some way open things up for TiVo again.
But it is far from a sure thing, and there are existing agreements and
contracts in place with NDS that have to be honored, or dealt with in
some way.
