I like it a lot. I had a Sony S1 box, which I liked plenty as well, but it
was getting long in the tooth, and I wanted to upgrade when they offered the
lifetime service transfer. I love dual tuners for starters, I upgraded
capacity to a 320g drive from Weaknees (equiv to a 409 hour box at std def).
I'm also ready for digital cable without a box, and HD broadcast, I've
enjoyed not having a cable box for the last 15 years, and don't want to
change that any time soon.

I don't yet have anything resembling high def TV, don't plan to any time
soon either. I like moving shows around from the unit to the PC and my
wife's laptop (taking a few movies with us on a trip would be nice).

Had I known about the new lifetime service offer, I might have gone for the
S3 box and spent $800 or so, and upgraded capacity later with the WD MyBook
Tivo expansion if I'd known it was going to be offered so soon, and so
reasonable. I'm not unhappy with big capacity now, and if HD becomes a
standard for me, I'll have the option to max out my storage for a reasonable
cost. When I purchased, the expansion slot was being talked about, but no
roll out date was known.

I downloaded a hand full of free rental just to try it out, pretty slick.
Updates from the web is nice, as is monitoring disk space with the Tivo
Playlist.

My S1 box will become a backup VCR I suppose, unless I run into someone who
just wants to try it out. My S1 box is upgraded to 180 hours, but I'm
swapping that with my parents (I actually upgraded their 40 hour Sony S1
box), so they will have the upgraded box with lifetime on it (they have Dish
and can't use the new HD box).

I preferred the old Sony remote though, it fit my hand better, and I liked
having the "list" button for direct access to the now playing list, and a
dedicated TiVo power button, instead of going through the menu. I'm also
amazed at how hot the newer boxes run, my old S1 box ran about 31C all the
time, my in-laws S2 box was at 48C (normal!!). I think my HD box is about
40C.

I checked into Charter's DVR option, the box rental is only like $4/mo, so I
thought great, I'll give it a try. Until I found out the SERVICE to go with
the box is another $13/mo. TiVo's prices aren't all that far off when you
compare to that. My initial investment of $200 for lifetime service, and
another $200 to transfer it has worked out well thus far.
