All TiVos can have a second drive added, the only issue is how to
mount it. DVRupgrade and WeaKnees sell custom brackets for some
models of TiVo.

When you add a second drive to a TiVo and marry it the file system is
spread across both drives. You can remove the B drive without
divorcing them first. And if either drive fails the unit is dead.

If you take the image from a standard drive and expand it for a larger
drive, you can't re-expand it for another, even larger, drive. So say
you took a 160GB TiVo HD drive and replace it with a 500GB drive. You
won't be able to swap it out later for a 1TB drive. You'd have to
have a backup of the original image from the 160GB to start from and
expand from the 160GB image to the 1TB. Or you'd need something like
Instant Cake to get the image.

You can replace a drive with one of the same size - or larger if your
willing to waste the space. If you do that 500GB upgrade then develop
problems you could swap the drive for another 500GB drive by
transferring the image over as is. The probablem is only with
expanding the file system.
