The THX and the fancy front panel display, and the glow remote were the differences. I went with the HD, the core of the units are pretty much the same.
The one nice thing (at least for initial setup) is the cable cards on the HD install through the front of the unit, not the back, maybe easier if you have to do anything with the cards later. Shop around though, the S3 boxes can be had very close in price to the HD box, so it's really about what you want. Besides, what's the difference if they still make the S3 box or not if you want one. When a good car goes out of production, collectors will buy them. If you want those features that the S3 box has, get it.
