There is no additional charge for the transfer. If a unit is in
warranty and you have it repaired by TiVo they transfer the lifetime
to the new box free of charge. If the unit is out of warranty and you
have TiVo repair it then there is an out-of-warranty repair fee, which
includes the lifetime transfer to the new unit.

TiVo never actually repairs your box and sends it back to you, they
take your box and send you another, already refurbished box from their
rotating stock. So *any* repair of a lifetime box includes transfer
of lifetime to a new box. Then your old box goes through repair and
refurb and goes into the stock to be sent to someone else when they
have their unit repaired.
