When he powers the unit down, the SSID disappears and of course he loses the 
network connection, it's his.

I suspect that either he's not saving his changes, or the modem's flash 
memory may be volatile when it shouldn't be (dead battery on the board 
maybe?).

In any case, a new one is so little money if you don't have to have fancy 
that it seems a waste of time to do more than figure out that it's the 
router doing things it shouldn't, and replace it.
