Well I saw that section but didn't quite get it with regards to vpopmail
so I was hoping someone had done it.

Here's what I tried.
[vpopmail@lds240 bin]$ ./tmda-ofmipd -d -c ../../domains/lds.dyndns.org -A
../../bin/vchkpw -a ../../domains/lds.dyndns.org/vpasswd

Which should be telling it to use /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw as the
password program and /home/vpopmail/domains/lds.dyndns.org/vpasswd as the
user/pass pair file. (or am I supposed to feed it to the vpasswd.cdb
file?)

On the mail server I just see entries like this when a client tries to
make a connection.
Incoming connection from ('66.6.105.203', 56483)
Peer: ('66.6.105.203', 56483)
Data: 'EHLO malcolmlinux.ldsinc.com'
Data: 'QUIT'

On Sylpheed's log I see this (client side).
Connecting to SMTP server: smtp.lds.dyndns.org ...
SMTP< 220 lds240.ldsinc.com ESMTP tmda-ofmipd
ESMTP> EHLO malcolmlinux.ldsinc.com
ESMTP< 250-lds240.ldsinc.com
ESMTP< 250 AUTH LOGIN CRAM-MD5 PLAIN
*** SMTP AUTH not available
*** Error occurred while sending MAIL FROM
*** SMTP AUTH failed
SMTP> QUIT
SMTP< 221 Bye
