Thanks for the response.  This would indeed achieve what I wanted,
except that I didn't want my MUA to have to know about the domain
dirac.demon.co.uk.

However, I was trying to solve the problem in the wrong place, since
it has nothing to do with TMDA specifically, except in so far as TMDA
uses address extensions.  I've now fixed things in the MTA instead
(with a couple of local additions to sendmail ruleset 3).
