I'm not sure how you have qmail set up, but your mention of the
defaultdelivery file makes me think you followed Life with Qmail.  If
so, double check that your /service/qmail-send/run file runs the
qmail-start program like this:

qmail-start "`cat /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery`"

The defaultdelivery is not a standard qmail file; it is a convenient
addition that Dave Sill suggests in LWQ, so you have to make sure that
you pass the contents to qmail-start yourself.

It will not.  The default delivery commands given to qmail-start only
come into play if the user exists but has no appropriate .qmail file.
