What seems to have happened was that my application was using sendmail, not tmda-sendmail, so the FROM was being set correctly, but the envelope sender wasn't. TMDA was (correctly) intercepting replies that were returned to the envelope sender address. I replaced "sendmail -oi -t" with "tmda-sendmail" in the application, and all appears to be well again.
