Could it be procmail that's rewriting the variable, or tmda not 
re-exporting it properly after processing? I have:

        postfix -> procmail -> tmda -> procmail

as my delivery path. If it's being rewritten (but not logged?!) maybe it
can be worked around. It seems to me, though, that this isn't an uncommon
configuration, so finding a consistent workaround might help others, too.
