FWIW, I've seen similar problems with rm when dealing with a ton of files.  I would think 10k would 
cause the error on my system, too.

rm is part of the OS.

In any case, I can't reproduce Brian's problem.  I tested normal TMDA
operations with 20K messages in ~/.tmda/pending/, and 20K entries in
~/.tmda/responses/ and couldn't detect any slowdown or problems.  This
was under Mac OS X though, not Linux/ReiserFS.
