C/R can "interoperate" if the users are savvy enough to
generate a custom address to submit to the list.

If I subscribe to a list by typing my untagged email address
into a webpage, then I will challenge the list, and the list will not
respond.

If I email to [EMAIL PROTECTED], I will be subscribed
with an address that will expire after 30 days. Thereafter, my
challenges will not be answered.

If I do not now what address the list will send me messages
from, I cannot whitelist it.

We, as savvy users, can make C/R interoperate with lists.

But many people would get confused.

Oh. I thought the point was to block spam/UBE. My mistake.
Are you saying you will happily recieve spam as long as some human is
giving you attention?

Spammers will automate C/R responses. It is a one time cost
for them to do so. As soon as enough people start using C/R, they
will start responding to C/R mail. They will then need maildrops,
which increase their costs somewhat, and will probably make it easier
to trace and block them.
