I have heard that this is changing. The latest viruses are assumed at
least partly to be distributed to get more open relay mailers.
Usually those viruses set up a backdoor and those backdoors can
easily be used to install a small mail server.

However, I assume those are not yet used to confirm messages.. TMDA is
not yet popular enought.
