After much thinking on this issue, I've decided not to implement this. It introduces too many complexities, and I doubt users would actually find it useful. Because templates are so highly personalized, they'd probably end up customizing them anyway, but then they'd have multiple directories of templates to deal with instead of just one directory with the three templates.
