To the best of my knowledge, TMDA does *not* check the "correctness" of the source email. Nor should it, really. The whole point of C/R is to assume that a challenge will only reach reliable sources with well-formed return addresses.
My guess is that you found a piece of spam, and TMDA was trying to reply to a forged (and corrupted) envelope sender. If this is a continuing issue for you, please post a sample of the incoming mail, with headers intact.
