Are you saying that vmailmgr will always convert any address that
happens to contain a . into a :, or that vmailmgr addresses are always
in the format initial:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Either way seems odd, since : is a very common field separator in
configuration files etc., including the qmail configuration files.

That would probably make sense, *if* the mapped username always contains
precisely one (never zero, never more) :s. It sounds like this is not
the case, because you mentioned that some of your users (without . in
the email) work, and some don't.

Perhaps somebody more familiar with vmailmgr internals, or the
vmailmgrinfo.py script can comment. It appears to have been written by:
