Your pillows are full of fungus...According to an October 14, 2005 article from WebMD, British researchers have found that fungal spores fill the pillows we sleep on at night. The team of scientists analyzed both feather pillows and synthetic pillows in regular use and found that each carried up to 16 different fungi. The lead investigator, Ashley Woodcock, told WebMD, "We secrete about 100 liters of sweat into a bed over a year. We do not wash our quilts and pillows, so they are an ideal place to find fungi." Woodcock thinks fungi, dust mites, and people are probably part of a pillow ecosystem. For people who suffer from respiratory disease, these fungi could trigger allergies and asthma. There may be no risk associated with these fungi for healthy people. In fact, the fungi in pillows may actually help build up the immune systems of people who are not not allergic or at risk for diseases caused by fungal infections.
