I was told mine was 'idiopathic'. Meaning, no known cause.
I got mine exactly 4 weeks to the day after my son got married. It was a big
wedding (370 guests). My daughter-in-law is Chinese and large weddings are the
norm. There were a lot of visitors coming, going, staying with us and we had a
terrific time. However it was an 'extremely' busy few months. The ring bearer,
my husband, a great-nephew (a baby then) and my niece all got a cold. I had
the sniffles for a couple of days. This was all at the time of the wedding. I
had just been back to work for 10 days, all the company had gone and it was the
first 3 day weekend after all the festivities. I had a sore low back which was
not unusual for me. I lay down for a while after my first cup of coffee. My
hubby went for a walk. By the time he returned about 45 mins later I had
called the ambulance and they were just coming in the house when he got back.
He was in shock. I was in terrific pain. Spent 2 months in hospital. I had
many MRI's (3 the first day). A spinal tap and the IV steroids. I kept going
back to hospital for 5 more months taking out patient physiotherapy. Another
year of therapy after that on my own as well as some special exercise classes
that were put on at the Unversity of Calgary and I finally was walking using
only the cane and the walker.

So not sure what caused any of it. Just stress, the little sniffles I had or
maybe just was my time.
I'm T8 - T10 and can walk using cane etc.

  Subject: [TMIC] Reason for TM

  To everyone w/ TM:
Do most of you know why you got Transverse Myelitis? I was not told a reason
why I had gotten it. Even at Baylor University. I don't recall anyone asking
me if I had been ill w/ anything prior to the TM. I was just curious to know
how your drs. addressed you. One leg was paralyzed after a fall on December
13th and by Christmas I was totally paralyzed from T12 down. It took them too
long to determine what I had; therefore, the steriods did not help; although I
also realize they don't always aid in recovery. I was sent to a rehab center
w/ the one leg paralyzed and became totally paralyzed there. They should have
had an accurate diagnosis before sending me to the 1st one; but apparently the
one they used was not accurate. I know I was sent there too soon. And the
second one I went to I was verbally abused and acquised of saying things I did
not say such as to an aide. That is one reason I decided to even leave my
state for help and go elsewhere to Baylor. I was treated completely different
there - it was certainly worth going there. By the time I returned home I had
been gone for 3 months!!! Natalie Mizenko
