Yes, I was gonna write you guys to ask about this. I had it on tape and
listened to it again. One of the drs suggested TM, and House said very
clearly, "you start him on antibiotics for transverse myelitis".
They mention TM often as a "possibility" for a lot of the patients who come in,
but they always dismiss it very quickly. They also mention sarcoidosis for
almost every patient, but it never is. I'm still waiting for them to have a
show about someone with sarcoidosis, as that is what I have.
It can be very mysterious, and would make a great show.
Showcase is rerunning all the old episodes, and last night they showed the
episode with the black college student who they dx'd with TM, so I listened
more carefully to it this time. They believed that he had TM that was caused by
an infection, but he had no active infection in his body. So they talked about
the possibility of an old infection that was gone, but the damage lingered on.
When they learned he had just been in Jamaica, House assumed (with no evidence
at all) that the TM may have been caused by pesticide poisoning on the pot
there, so he started the kid on some drug for that. He had a terrible reaction
to that, so that was scrapped. Then they discovered that he had a radioactive
keychain, and they never mentioned TM again. He died from radiation poisoning.
This was the first patient House had that didn't make it. The first time I
saw this episode, I thought they introduced the radiation because they didn't
want to show someone dying from TM. But after listening more closely last
night, he never really had TM at all, it was just radiation poisoning.
take care everybody -- Michelle

Yes, I saw it and heard it loud and clear. And correct me if I am wrong, but
I think I heard them say when they were getting ready to treat the TM, they
were going to treat it with and antibiotic. Is that what you heard? I guess a
doctor did not write the lines or I was not aware that it was treatable with an
antibiotic.
