Grah... I've pretty much stretched out my PC software uploading skills to the max, and now I feel like I'm in the same boat as Brina. :P
Fortunately, this was not virus/worm related. Nope. My husband takes the confessed blame for slagging our home computer. The instrument of destruction...? Ad Aware! >< Thus, I put out my warning, to all who have thought about using this to check for trojan horses and spy bugs on their hardrive. Use it with care! Once the program has collected all the critters that are questionable, it's stongly suggested to QUARANTINE them. Even if you don't know what quarantine means. Deleting is bad... Because my husband deleted them, and aparently, the Ad Aware had a few ESSENTIAL files that Windows XP needs in order to operate. Our PC was working fine before this. But since he deleted them, we are stuck up the creek without a paddle. While I was able to back up our most recent files (I did a mjaor backup a couple months ago), we can't get the PC to recognize the Windows XP disk in the CD-ROM so we can reinstall the OS. Hubby's thinking we need to reset the computer back to it's factory installed setting so we can at least get it to install Windows XP. I'm not looking for ward to this. It means totally having to go back and install the ten million other programs on it again afterwards. (But then.. on the other hand, perhaps I can change that annoying Korean language feature that has taken over the Office proggies and IE) Which boils down to this.. anyone else have any better suggestions? Or should we just go ahead and reformat the hard drive?
