Which boils down to this.. anyone else have any better suggestions? Or should we just go ahead and reformat the hard drive? Thanks!

Sounds like the only way it'll help your problem. You know, the light at the end of my tunnel is becoming quite dim. I've done just about all I can. Time to go zip disk shopping...and then put in the red IBM Aptiva Product Recovery and Diagnostics CD of Doom.
