You shouldn't be changing or clearing those variables anyway.

Four "-v"s is usually sufficient.  You've gone somewhat overboard in
your example.

Is that really the entire contents of those logs?  What happens if you try with:

% strace -s9999 -ff -o /tmp/tmux.out tmux start-server

Send the /tmp/tmux.out file if it contains information.
