You haven't explained what you are trying to do. If the server started by start-server stayed around for you before then you must have been creating a session in .tmux.conf. The server will exit if there are no sessions and tmux start does not create one.
If you want to use start-server you will have to create a session in .tmux.conf. Otherwise use new-session -d.
