to be part of the School's republic day activity
sounds good.

However, I think you might want to think of activities
and not competetions. Why not think of some activity
which will involve everyone without judging, at least
in the first few interactions? 

I could suggest one:
You could give a white paper to each student and ask
them to draw / write something. Then you could put all
the papers together and that would be a "scrap book"
which will remain with them. Turning the pages of that
scrap book on any day would take them back to some
good memories. You could even add to it by including
some pictures of celebrations that you may take.

You could make one scrap book per class.

Does it sound doable?
