Hi Prasanthi,
Managing the FDP by cooking, packing and distributing sounds tedious to
me and is quite controversial, as you said. A simpler, easy to manage and
scaleable approach is finding low cost groceries and distributing them to
orphanages and old age homes. This involves our group at identification and
management level but takes us out of implementation nitty gritties.
An analogy is how we process medical cases. We identify medical cases,
provide the necessary and affordable financial support and put the patient
in touch with the hospital. Beyond this, we don't do the jobs of doctors or
nurses, right?
I guess with FDP, Education and SDP cases, if we implement the model of
medical cases, that itself is going to make a dramatic amount of difference
for the group's visibility. Integration of service providers is a very
critical missing piece in the non-profit sector. The approaches we take in
this aspect, can go a long way in influencing this sector.
This also helps the broader vision of the group of working with like
minded groups. Once like minded groups realize that we have the necessary
methodologies, infrastructure and guidance to stitch together different
non-profit sectors, they would be a lot more keen to use what we have to
offer.
I might have jumped far too much in my fantasies ... but then again
dreaming is free of cost ;-) Comments are welcome, as usual :-)
Cheers!
Karthik

Hello Karthik,
For FDP,
1. Bringing Provisions and Cooking
- We need to be ready with utensils as well
2. Distribution
3. Identification - We usually go to LVPEI, Indo-American Cancer Institute
and also give to any beggars on the road.
We do not need many volunteers. For cooking we need two people (ideally)
and for packing and distribution two. Overall four volunteers are enough.
The difference of opinion is with respect to the people we distribute.
Problem is with volunteers (for cooking and also for distribution).
As most of the members feel that distribution of free food helps the
laziness of the people, they are not interested in this project and so they
are not turning up.
The idea which is accepted by most of our members is that to distribute in
govt. run hostels and SC/ST homes and orphanages.
We will not have cooking and utensils problem. We need not pack. At the
same time, the children in the hostels are deserving ones. (Regularly we
read in the news papers that the quality of food is very bad in those
hostels).
Coming to the support, many non-members are very much impressed with this
project and they provided us some money.
One of our members, Ms. Radhika, volunteered to give us rice bags at
reasonable price (when compared to Hyd market).
All these are facts. Not my opinions.
