*Eye Donation Fortnight*

The Government of India has declared August 25th to September 8th as ‘*The
Eye Donation fortnight*’ in memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi
ever since he pledged his eyes in 1986.

*Significance of Eye Donation *

Money cannot restore sight. Only donation of eyes after death can bring
light into the lives of the needy. A willing heart and a steely resolve is
needed to donate eyes.

In India, there are 25 lakh corneal blindness cases and 25,000 new cases are
added every year. But there is a huge shortage of donor eyes, as only 15,000
corneas are collected.
