I'll bet I can answer that :)

I've got about 55 java's going, 11 for each of the 5 virtual domains.
When I posted about this, it was quickly pointed out that most of
these are threads under one parent java process.

Just curious, but did you upgrade to java 1.3 recently?  I'm still
using tomcat 3.1, the extra java threads showed up when I changed
from jdk1.2.2 to 1.3.0.
