mod_jk Garbled?

Hi There,   I'm trying to set up Tomcat 3.2 Beta 8 with Apache 1.3.12. I downloaded a copy of mod_jk.so from jakarta.apache.org, the same location from wich I obtained tomcat. However, when I try to load this module apache complains that mod_jk.so is garbled or might not be an apache DSO. Can anyone help me out with this?   Many thanks,   -James
