Setting distributable="true" on the Context element in server.xml didn't work, but I noticed I had missed out the distributable element in the web.xml. Added is, and all works fine.
Sorry, the code had changed since last time I did anything for that feature (maybe 6 months ago). Anyway, it would be interesting to hear if this feature works well enough in the real world.
