It's not an uncommon desire to share objects between distributed servlet engines, that are above the application level.
Just some examples: If you have a unique key generator you might want to share the last created key between the instances. (Yes I know that there are other solutions to achive this) It might be usefull to share data between beans that have application scope to enshure that all have the same information.
