Hi,

1. if you installing 8.1.6 or 8.1.7 you only have to follow the install doc
from oracle, this is straight and works fine
2. tomcat has a tomcat-apache-howto in the docs dir which could be helpful ;-)

3. each java book which covers the jdbc topic should give you advice. but here
is a hint regarding the used jdbc driver from oracle. the 8.1.6/7 package only
comes with the jdbc classes for jdk1.1.8. go to technet.oracle.com, look for
jdbc drivers and pick classes12 for solaris (don't care). unpack the file and
trow away the lib*.so, only the classes12.zip is from interest. copy this to
$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib and include to your classpath. works for me on 4 linux
boxes (suse and rh). now you have to decide which driver to use (the thin or
the oci8). the thin is pure java, easier and works in 80% of all cases. the
oci8 has proprietary parts (needs net8 installation, comes with the database),
needs more config (net8), but should be your favorit if you need a reliable
driver for hugh data, heavy traffic and fail safe work. if you want to use
oracle's connection pooling you must use oci8.

hope this helps
