Now I am getting different errors: the variable value when opening the window is: Variable Name: %CATALINA_HOME% Variable Value: C:\tomcat
this is what displays... C:\>%CATALINA_HOME% 'C:\tomcat\bin\' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. so if I try this... C:\>%CATALINA_HOME%startup The CATALINA_HOME environment variable is not defined correctly This environment variable is needed to run this program I am running on a windows machine.
