1) look in your logs (and if this problem seems associated with the Oracle install, look in its log(s) and the syslogs, too).
2) prompt> export JAVA_OPTS=-verbose prompt> $CATALINA_HOME/bin/catalina.sh run
watch the console and see where and why Tomcat stops initializing
