 From my experience you need to compile mod_jk yourself or you will get the 
"file garbled" problem.  So, how to get apxs working?  How about sending 
the entire output of the command when you run it so we can see the details.

BTW, this seems to be one of the most common questions on this group 
concerning the install.  Everyone has problems with it so at least your not 
alone :)
