This topic has been discussed several times.

The reasons you mention can be adressed
by a proper organisation of the mail client:

- Most clients are able to show the messages 
  by thread. 
- Most clients are able to filter the messages in 
  a way that all tomcat messages go in a separate 
  folder.
- Most clients are able to delete messages with
  a given age.

If your client can't do that, it's time to upgrade.
