I just finished a Pooling implementation that works with Servlets and Filters that works to compile XSL much like JSP's... performance went from 2900ms to 100ms for formatting of xml documents.
I'm still working on abstracting it to work with FOP in the same manner. If you are interested in the code, email me directly. I just can give the advice to monitor the system to see any differences.
