Actually, this was one of the things I had to change when setting it up (on Mac OS X) - I had to rebuild the Jars as, strangely, my 4.1.12 didn't had the Config class(es).On that note, there is no need to build the Java side of the connectors when building. All you need is the Apache side, and this can be done with ./configure....there is no need to run ant or anything else to get a connector binary, as the JAR binaries of the connectors are already included in the Tomcat package.
