hp-ux binaries have an inbuilt idea of where to find share libraries. It's called 'chattr' (change attributes). This is in addition to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH var. btw, Isn't this called SHLIB_PATH or something under hp-ux 10.20? Also, why hpux 10.20? It doesn't have kernel threading and you'll get terrible performance. HP's own docs say that hpux 10.20 is all but incompatible with java. You may as well run linux.
