While I haven't used JDK1.4 logging much, I think the consensus is that Log4j is the more powerful framework. JDK1.4 logging may gain traction simply because it is part of the official JDK. However, its development will be slower than that of Log4j as Log4j is being worked on constantly by dedicated developers.

As far as documentation goes, if you can't find it, I can't imagine you actually looked for it. Well, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, you are in luck. Ceki Glc, Log4j's creator, has just finished a book on it. It is available for purchase. Currently, it is in PDF format, but he recently announced that it will be printed. I don't know the details of the printed book, but I'll point you to the PDF book as well as some other sources of information.

Here are Log4j's links to its various documentation

Notice in particular these....

Ceki's book (I recommend this highly!!!!)

The short manual

Don't forget to reference the Javadoc. There is lots of info provided there

Also look at the articles on log4j further down the main documentation page. And, of course, look at the new Wiki site for Log4j.

I think I have given you about a months worth of reading here so take it all in. If you have questions, ask on the log4j-user list. You will get more help there with Log4j than on this list.

Thanks Joe!
I'll look into it. I've looked all over for some good info on Log4j but I
can't find squat. Maybe I am just missing it, that's very possible, but I
can't find much in my searches & looking at the obvious...
