I do.  I had to experiment with JDK 1.4 logging just to see what it's
all about.  Waste of time.

I find the online log4j documentation (at
http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j) more then sufficient.  You will also
find the log4j user mailing list responsive and knowledgeable.  My
advice is to just dig in and get started with a trivial log4j
configuration.  Play a bit, get comfortable, and then add
commons-logging if you'd like.
