I've had similar problems and I could have sworn I saw someone give the advice that it's best to give each webapp it's own copy of the shared jars. I did that and the problems went away. I hate having duplicate files, but I guess if proper application "segmentation" is going on it's probably safer anyway. Just my two cents.
