Howdy, Right now they don't get cleared out automatically. At one point I played around with a patch that added a clearWorkOnShutdown property support to the Host element, but never submitted it to tomcat and I don't think I even have it at this point in time ;)
You can clear out the work directory yourself if you care, via any number of ways. It's only a concern if disk space is expensive or in short supply.
